Mercury in Retrograde and Misbehaving Characters

Mercury in Retrograde and Misbehaving Characters

Maybe you believe in astrology. Maybe you don’t. Mercury doesn’t really care, it is coming for you. The planet Mercury goes into retrograde about four times a year. It affects communication, decision-making skills, technology and a wealth of other things. If you are going to screw your life up, odds are you’ll do it during a retrograde.

While retrograde can really put me in a funk it is quite interesting to see the dynamic it plays in my writing. Apparently, my characters feel it too. The following is a selection of excerpts featuring some of my own characters and their interactions as written, during Mercury in Retrograde. (I feel like I just said Mercury and retrograde a LOT.)

In Last Call, we have a very bad decision:

“I suppose, but you look so sad over here all by yourself. I just wanted to say hello. Where’s your man? Surely he wouldn’t stand up a doll like you.” I moved just a little closer.

Her eyes welled up, and she trailed the condensation on the glass with one tapered fingernail. The liquid pooled around the tip, and she tapped it onto the scarred tabletop.

“I was just being foolish, I guess. Ya see we broke up. Or I guess you’d say, he broke up. I wasn’t ready, an’ I told him if he changed his mind I’d wait here for him tonight. And,” she glanced around the empty bar and shrugged, “yeah.”

“Shame on him. You are obviously a fine lady, and you deserve better. What do you say we have a drink and just get acquainted?” I raised my glass and gave her a wink.

She glanced at the door again and seemed to give in to the resignation that her boyfriend was not coming. “What the hell.”

In Soul Purge, Rashu makes a slew of bad choices but this first one sets it all in motion:

DeeAnn could just barely make out his form in the shadows, his muscles bunched tight and sweat drenched his flesh. She wondered what could make Emilia so fearful when Rashu rushed off into the dusky night. As he bolted through the woods, DeeAnn called weakly after him, “Ye cannae leave me! Yer not allowed!”

In Immortal Mine, Beatrice’s father obviously misunderstood a deal he made with the devil:

She looked down and froze. Father.

His voice wafted up to her and even with her heightened sense of hearing, she strained to follow the words.

“They promised me…” A bubbling cough swallowed the rest of his words.

“What, Father? What did they promise you?” His eyes were the same eyes she remembered, they were warm, drawing her into the deep pools of blue. She felt her heart soften.

“They promised me they wouldn’t hurt you if I told them where you were.” He coughed again and Beatrice let his words sink in. He reached one hand up towards her, “Please, daughter…”

In Unwet, Keira and Phanessa clearly have a misunderstanding:

“Lies! You deceitful wench! We heard you just last night!” Phenessa struck her once across the face.

Keira struggled through her fear to recall anything she had said the night before and then it struck her. Oh no. Last night her father informed her of her mother’s illness. She would not be with them much longer and as the eldest daughter, it was Keira’s responsibility to take her place as the matriarch of their family. And then Tatoo Arms burst in.

“Please, Phenessa, you misunderstood. What was heard must have been taken out of context. I can explain if you would just..”

“Throw her over.” The High Priestess turned to walk away.

“But, mistress what if she is telling the truth?” Tattoo Arms spoke up, too little too late.

“And if she is not?” The ice in Phenessa’s voice left no room for negation.

Now I have to figure out when Mercury goes retrograde, because this might be the solution to some of my writing and non-writing problems. Everyone loves a little spice, right?
