If you’re gearing up for a big book launch (congrats on that!), no doubt you’re shooting out hundreds of emails to book bloggers and reviewers hoping to set up book reviews, guest posts, author interviews, and promo posts. I’m willing to bet that 95% of bloggers are going to ask you for a Media Kit.
Last year, when setting up my first big book launch, I was asked repeatedly for a Media Kit. Of course, I had no idea what the heck that was. So I learned…
A Media Kit is basically a document or ZIP file that contains ALL the information a blogger/reviewer could need about you and the book you are trying to promote. Here is a list of EVERYTHING you need for a good Media Kit:
- Book Title + Blurb — Instead of making them look up the book title and blurb on Amazon, include it at the top of the Media Kit. That way, they’ll know exactly what they’re posting about.
- Tagline/Elevator Pitch — This is a handy addition to a post, and ideal for posting a snippet to Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.
For example, here’s the tagline I use for my book: “A faceless, nameless assassin. A forgotten past. The Hunter of Voramis–a killer devoid of morals, or something else altogether? (The Last Bucelarii–dark fantasy with a look at the underside of human nature)”
It’s short and sweet, and bloggers can quote it in their Facebook or Twitter posts (140 characters or less)
- Book Info — Not all bloggers will ask for this, but it’s handy to include just in case. This will include: Author Name, Publication/Launch date, Paperback price, eBook price, Page count, and ISBN/ASIN (or both).
- Buy Links — The idea behind these posts is to encourage people to buy your book, right? To do that, they need a link to the book on Amazon (US, UK, Canada, etc.), as well as any other online retailers where the book can be found (Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, etc.).
- Author Bio — Readers want to know about the man/woman behind the book! Include your bio (the one posted to your website, Amazon, social media, etc.).
- Social Media Links — This should include: your website/blog, Facebook Page, Twitter, Google+, Goodreads author page, Amazon author page, and any other social media sites you use (Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, etc.).
- Book Cover — DO NOT paste this image into the document itself, but attach it separately.
- Author Image –– Again, send as a separate attachment, NOT in the document itself.
- Excerpts — To give readers a taste of your fiction goodness, add 1 or 2 excerpts (500 to 1000 words each) to the Media Kit.
- Fun Facts — Give people a chance to get to know you! For example, I list “10 Things You Need to Know About Me”, as well as “A Few of My Favorite Things”. It’s just something fun and different from the typical promo content.
- Other Links –– Include a link to your author newsletter landing page, the link to your Facebook Launch Party, or even to your Thunderclap campaign. Not all bloggers will post these added links, but it’s good to include them in the Media Kit.

To Format or Not to Format?
I have received Media Kits that are already fully formatted, HTML and all. They definitely make it easier for me to post the content to my site, but they also prevent me from formatting the post according to my template and preferences.
If you want to spend the time formatting the post and pasting the HTML text into a document, go for it. Otherwise, send just the plain text (already broken into subheaders, lists, and other easy-to-read formatting) and let the blogger decide what they want to upload.
I guarantee that bloggers will be SO thankful you took 5 minutes to put together a Media Kit. It saves them a lot of time and makes them more likely to welcome you back on your next book launch!
