Event: Confluence

Through the B2BCyCon, the editors here learned of a wonderful opportunity for authors. It’s an event held??annually in Pittsburg, PA. We are excited to share this interview telling you all about them.

Q:??What exactly is Confluence?
A: Confluence is a full weekend (Fri-Sun) Conference with a focus on Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, in literary, musical and visual arts.

Q- What types of activities can the public expect to find this year?
A- During the weekend we hold readings and panels with authors and editors, a series of concerts, poetry readings and panels, autographing sessions,?? ???literary beer??? small-group author discussions, writing workshops and exercises, science presentations, and a beer tasting. This year we will be holding a new cosplay contest and panel presentation.
We have an art show, a dealers room, and a hospitality suite where members can relax, find refreshments or just chat with Confluence???s professional guest???s, other members of the conference and maybe even our guests of honor.

Q: Speaking of your guests, could you talk a bit about this year’s Guests of Honor, Sharon Lee and Steve Miller from the Liaden Universe novels, and the band Consortium of Genius?
A: The writing team of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller published their first novel in the generation-spanning saga of the Liaden Universe in 1988; the nineteenth and latest volume is due out in May 2017. They have also published a fantasy duology (Duainfey and Longeye), as well as many works of short fiction and nonfiction published in anthologies, newspapers and magazines. Married since 1979, the authors currently live in Maine and act as staff to several cats.

For more than twenty years, our Featured Music Guests for 2017, Consortium of Genius (a.k.a. “the CoG”), have been entertaining…er, terrorizing the inhabitants of New Orleans and the surrounding countryside with their insane experiments in nerd rock and world domination. The CoG have performed over 200 concerts….um, given over 200 lectures throughout the Southern U.S. in an attempt to back up the claims of their megalomaniacal leader, Dr. Milo T. Pinkerton III, who states that “My theories are totally sound, and the SOUND is totally LOUD!”. A dozen of the band’s songs have received worldwide airplay on The Dr. Demento Show, including such warped classics as “Placebo!”, “Science Fight,” “Zombie Apocalypse Barbecue,” “They Said I Was Mad,” and “All About the Wookiee.” We welcome our learned but crazed new overlords as they make only their second-ever appearance outside the Gulf Coast states. Come! Listen!! Bow to the CoG!!!

??Q:??What sets Confluence apart from other local Conferences or Conventions?
A: What sets Confluence apart from other Conferences and Conventions is the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Many of our guests, guest authors, musicians and artist that attend confluence return year after year to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. By contrast, many other cons lean towards being vendor-driven where the primary purpose is for producers to sell their wares to the attendees and for the organizers to make money through the invited personalities who charge fans for each personal interaction. Although Confluence does have a dealers room, it is not the main focus of the Con.

Another distinction of Confluence is its consistently high quality. Confluence has been held annually for all but two of the past 29 years, and many members of the all-volunteer committee that runs the conference have been involved for most of its history. We know how to put on a great get-together and we try to do that for our attendees at every opportunity.

A third specialty of Confluence is the variety and amount of live music on hand. During programming hours from early Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, you’ll be able to sample from an almost continuous schedule of concerts of different types of genre music ranging from “filk” (the traditional music of SF fandom) to “dementia” (fannish comedy music) to Harry-Potter-themed “wizard rock” to tunes by the bards of the Society for Creative Anachronism — there’s bound to be some sound during the weekend that will please your ears.

Q: Who attends Confluence and what do they get from it?
The guests whom you might encounter at Confluence are there as much to acquaint you with their work and hopefully sell it, as they are to interact and share their love and excitement about the SF/F/H genres.

And what about those fans? The folks who register for and attend Confluence are a mix of different ages and backgrounds and come from both near and far. They share your appreciation for genre content and its creators and are ready to engage you in conversation!

You will not only meet and have opportunities to sit and chat with established authors and other like-minded people, but also with budding authors, fans, artists and musicians.

Q: “Why, when we live in an age where science fiction, horror and fantasy have become more readily available through social media, retail outlets and TV, would a person want to pay to come to Confluence?
A: Confluence is a place of opportunity. It provides a chance for fans to meet and talk with the people who originate and tell the stories we read and watch. Although social media does have its place, it can???t replace real human contact and face-to-face social interaction. There???s something much more satisfying and memorable about meeting someone, shaking their hand and being able to speak to them in person, than pinging them through social media.

Q: Confluence offers so much in just three short days! Is there anything else you want to tell us about Confluence?
A: Confluence is a part of Parsec, a 501c3 organization. There are four branches to Parsec: 1. Confluence, the annual Conference. 2. Alpha, the young writers workshop. 3. Parsec, the group that meets once a month at the Squirrel Hill Library in Oakland PA.?? 4. Parsec INK, the publishing house.

Every year, Parsec INK publishes a semi-pro paying anthology of speculative fiction stories called Triangulation. The book launch for Triangulation is held during Confluence weekend. Many of the writers that attend Confluence submit their stories for consideration in the anthology.

If you???re interested in reading a Triangulation anthology, many of them can be found on Amazon or you can visit the Parsec INK site to see all the books that are offered. http://parsecink.com/

One of the great things about Confluence is that it offers a wide diversity in programming; there???s something for every fan of SF/F/H. And you get all this, in a relaxed, friendly, three day weekend.

Hope to see you at Confluence!

OWS Ink Presents: David Wiley

We are excited to announce the debut of David Wiley’s novella, his first solo manuscript, which is on schedule for release this coming Friday, April 28. We are so excited in fact, we will be celebrating with a release party on Facebook April 28-29. Come join in the fun and win some great books to add to your collection!

The purpose of this post today is to dangle some teasers about David and his story in front of you. Let’s begin, shall we?

Title: A Merchant in Oria
Genre: High Fantasy
Release Date: April 28, 2017

Blurb:

Firion is a young merchant descended from generations of merchants. His first big break comes along when he sets out to trade with the wealthy dwarven kingdom of Oria. He has always dreamed of visiting this grand kingdom, having heard his father describe it in detail a hundred times while he was younger. But when Firion arrives in Oria, he is jarred by the details present that contradict with the image etched into his mind. Something dark and sinister seems to be afoot in Oria, but Firion knows he is no hero. He is just a simple merchant, and what can an ordinary person do in the face of danger and deception?

Meet David:

My name is David Wiley and I love to read and write. Growing up I always could be found with my nose in a book, graduating from Dr. Seuss to Goosebumps to Redwall and then into the broad realms of Science Fiction and Fantasy. As the years have progressed I have gained a love, in particular, for the works of Tolkien and for Medieval literature such as Beowulf. Books will undoubtedly remain a piece of who I am until the day I die.Writing, on the other hand, has an on-again, off-again relationship with me. I go through streaks of intensive writing and thoroughly enjoy those times. I go through equally-intensive stretches where I struggle to string together a few paragraphs because my interest gets pulled in other directions. But, like Tolkien, I am a sub-creator at heart and love to tell stories and imagine characters and worlds and my hope remains that, one day, something I write will capture the imagination of a reader and transport them to a world they have fallen in love with.

Q: If you could meet any one person, who would it be and why?
DW: If that person could be anyone throughout history, I would love to meet J.R.R. Tolkien because he has been my biggest influence and inspiration as a writer and as a scholar. Not only would it be fun to meet the man who created Middle-Earth and helped shape the genre of fantasy as we know it, but it would also be fun to sit down and discuss the Anglo-Saxons and Beowulf and other great works from the Medieval time period. If I had to choose one person who is currently living, that is a bit harder. I think that I would have to choose Brandon Sanderson, just to find out how he manages to write out so many great books in such a short span of time.
Q: Why writing? What drove you to pursue it as more than a closed hobby?

DW: I am a storyteller at heart. A lifetime of vivid imagination, immersion in fantasy worlds, and playing of Role-Playing games all fueled this passion within me. While I struggle at times to fit my style into more conventional standards, I still enjoy letting my imagination run wild and hope that any readers come to appreciate that in my writing. And really, the reason why I pursue it is with the hope that some reader, somewhere, if able to enjoy being transported to different worlds and experiences that they might never get to have in their mundane lives.
Q: You get stuck on a deserted island, what do you take with you? You can pick three things.

Clothing, the TARDIS, and the 10th Doctor. I won’t be stranded on that island for long, but rather would be heading on adventures through all of time and space. Probably starting with a visit to J.R.R. Tolkien!
Q: Where do you get the ideas for your writing from?

DW: There is a small wardrobe in my imagination that I must walk through backwards while reciting an incantation in Old English. That transports me to a??large cavern??where a golden dragon sits atop a horde of story ideas. I sneak into there, careful not to wake the dragon, and snag an idea and then sprint back to the portal that will return me back to my own world. Satisfactory answer? ????
Honestly, I’ve always had an imagination for the whimsical and fantastic, probably because I grew up reading books, watching fantasy movies, and playing RPGs.
Q: How do you relax?
DW: My wife and I play a lot of board games. Not the ones you grew up with like Scrabble, Monopoly, or any of those. But epic games like War of the Ring (based on the Lord of the Rings books), Agricola, Small World, and many others. It has become my favorite hobby, perhaps something I have started to enjoy even more than reading because it gives me interaction with my wife and, as he gets older, my son. We’re that strange couple who rarely watches television because we’d rather play games together.

Enjoy this excerpt:

The door opened and a stout dwarf stood in the door frame. Thick black hair hung below his shoulders and his beard dangled over his belly. Muscles bulged beneath a beige cloth tunic and calloused hands clenched into meaty fists. Firion stammered slightly, squirming under the intense glare of the dwarf.

???Um, excuse me sir?????? Firion said. Before he could continue, the dwarf slammed a fist into his jaw and sent him toppling backwards onto the soot-covered ground. Tiny clouds of grey-black mist swirled with the bursts of wind created upon his impact and he fought back the urge to sneeze.

???I???m not a sir,??? the dwarf said, spitting on him before she slammed the door shut.

Firion laid on his back in a cloud of soot, rubbing his jaw to ease the pain. He had always assumed the rumors of dwarven women looking like men were false, but his aching jaw provided compelling evidence that it had, in fact, been a woman he had upset. He wondered how long it took to get used to the idea of kissing a woman with a full beard. Muttering a curse, he pulled himself to his feet, dusting the soot off his clothes and skin as best as he could. There was no choice but to continue farther down the road…
