TMTT: Turn the Beat Around

TMTT: Turn the Beat Around

It’s time for another mixtape. The thing about today’s mixtape is that it is incredibly close to my heart. It’s about dance music and its dedicated to my beautiful friend, Kir, and her DJ brother, Benny, who passed away last month. Kir has been a rock of support for me and my writing, even reading my scary stories (and she’s not a fan of horror).

For me, dance club music is a blast from the past. I, for the most part, have not gone clubbing in a good  7 or 8 years. I remember the good times and the bad times, the dirty dancing and grinds to the floor, and the feel of a strange man’s arms around me as we swayed to a slow song. I remember cleaning the tables and oh, so many drunken gropes of my flesh. It was a time, and for the most part, I enjoyed it.

So, now, just for you DJ Benny Beats, I give you my favorite rump shakin’ dance tunes. Shake a few clouds loose up there in Heaven, will ya?

I don’t care when the song came out, it never gets old (and I expect it will be on a few mixtapes today!). If you’ve never seen a roomful of people making knocking motions with their hands, I daresay you’ve never fully experienced clubbing…

The next song I remember shaking my booty too, but it recently came back on my playlist thanks to a movie. Since I couldn’t decide which I liked better, and this is a special dedication, and it covers not 1 but 3 of my favorites, I decided to give you both versions…

This song is my absolute favorite. I hope to hear it every time I stepped through the double doors of whatever club claimed my fancy.

And now that you’re all sweating and the beat has hit your hips, you’ve no choice but to start the rump shaking. How low can YOU go?

Did you know I’ve only been to 2 concerts in my life? I saw Heart in concert when I was 19, and back in 2009, I had the opportunity to catch a fantastic concert before this group broke up (and I’m still sad about that.) Despite that they are no longer together, you can still catch their beat in clubs everywhere. My personal favorite?

I’m telling you people, I know there are songs like Moves Like Jagger and Vogue that get your body moving, but for me, there’s just nothing the same as the songs I’m sharing with you today. I might be going a little overboard, but this is secretly my true music passion, and I just love my Kir. C’mon y’all. Let’s Bust a Move!

And while I could keep going and going, I’m going to add a bonus song to this mixtape because I know that they need a little line dancing up there in Heaven too. Forget the Macarena. Forget the Electric Slide. Let’s do the Mambo No. 5.

So there you have it. I hope you got your jam on up there, Benny Beats. I gave you my finest. And that’s another Twisted Mixtape Tuesday.

Won’t you join in?

I’m sobbing…and laughing and truly SO INCREDIBLY touched.
I know that Ben is honored, humbled and SHAKING HIS OWN RUMP up in heaven.
    How could he not??

Plus I know that you and I would TROUBLE with a capital T if we went out together…but I like that about us!

Great mix, even greater friend…my sweet beautiful SAM. xoxo

Well, the second Rump Shaker was supposed to be a David Guetta mix of the Black Eyed Peas I Gotta Feeling. I fixed it and I’m so glad you like it. I hope that we do get the make some Trouble together sometime.

This is one of my favorite mixes this week. Yes, yes, even rump shaker. I was yelling at my screen when the girl in pitch perfect was singing No Diggity & no one was singing with her! I’m like “Oh c’mon! You know the song!”

I seriously could have gone on and on. I have so many fond memories of my clubbing days, mostly the music. my favorite is watching my 6 year old boppin his head when I get a chance to play my playlist. You know all these songs are on it.

Wow Dr Dre, that is such a blast from the past for me. I was working at the record store when he was really hot in the beginning. Never something I listened to, but he still creeped in my brain.
I love that you love Pitch Perfect, every time I hear a song from there I just love it so hard.
Everything else is just so perfect, and once again very much the soundtrack of my cruise ship days!

I think its fascinating that you worked at a record store. For some reason, I was never able to get a job at one, though I did work concessions at the movie theater. The weekend midnight special on Saturday nights was The Rocky Horror Picture Show and I loved watching all the punk rockers come in. My future boyfriend was one of them though I didn’t know it at the time.

No Diggity was one of my favourites from first year university. I still have it on a CD here that I pull out sometimes 🙂 I hadn’t known about Pitch Perfect – but I ADORED that video and am so suggesting (ie: forcing) that one for an upcoming date night….

Loved your list this week. Bust a move all!
