Poetry: Earthbound by Sam DeLoach

It’s poetry time and we are absolutely delighted to share the writing from one of Our Write Side’s favorite poets.

13423728_1174556172574834_1422797843348725024_nBorn and raised near Savannah, Georgia, Sam DeLoach grew up on his grandfather’s farm where he learned to love nature and the written word. He spent time in the Air Force where he was exposed to Agent Orange and became a disabled veteran. At thirty-one Sam graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism. While at UGA professors read his works in class, introduced him to visiting authors as a fellow writer, and encouraged him to continue honing his skills in the craft of writing. After graduating college, being disabled, Sam was a stay-at-home dad while continuing to write. Now an empty nester, he loves writing on nature and social issues. He is also an artist (watercolor and acrylics) and a photographer, but his first love is writing. Sam declares that if he dies while stroking the letters on a keyboard, he will die happy.

Earthbound

Here, I stand

A stalwart oak;

My feetpoetry DeLoach

Its robust roots

Planted firmly in the ground,

But my aspirations

Like the upper twigs

Of the oak’s highest bough

Reach skyward;

Still, we are both

Earthbound.

In pondering silence

I watch a hawk high aloft

On tawny wings

It is but a dot

Spiraling slowly overhead.

When its final breath expires

It drops forever

While what I truly am will rise

Instead.

So here I am

Like both the hawk and the oak,

But they do not consider

Their yesterdays

Nor their tomorrows:

They don’t frit time

Contemplating what will be,

Nor, in acrid aguish

Can they revive the ghosts

Of should be buried sorrows.

So I will content myself

To, like the oak and the hawk,

Be satisfied

With what’s revealed today,

For this present ethereal vapor

Is all I can control

Until on wings, unseen,

I am swept away.
