My 2017 Writing Goals for the New Year

My 2017 Writing Goals for the New Year

The year 2016 is winding down to a close and as January and the new year approaches, I’m reevaluating things and setting up some goals for 2017. Now, I’m not a resolutions type of gal, but when it comes to my writing I am making some goals. A lot of these are goals I had writing my first book, but have fallen by the wayside. So here are my year 2017 goals.

Get back into the habit of writing every day.

I did fabulously when I was writing my first draft of my first book, but then edits came and I just couldn’t work on them every day. I found them mentally taxing at points and got so discouraged at other points that I just set them aside for a time. I didn’t want to get burned out on my WiP so the time off really helped me from getting overwhelmed or giving up. But now that I’m looking to start writing the sequel, I really need to get in the habit of writing every day, even if it is just a page.

Part of my problem with writing the first draft of my sequel is that I didn’t do enough prewriting and planning to just sit down and write. So I have an early January goal of sitting down and doing the work prewriting the book and getting it ready for draft writing.

Another area I have been slacking in lately is social media. I have a Facebook page and a Twitter but I don’t always remember to post on there. I need to make up a schedule of what to post and when and then stick to it. My goal for 2017 is to continue growing my social media platform.

Stay on a writing schedule

Another goal I have is to prep and write my blog posts sooner. I post them on Mondays, but all too often it gets posted late Monday because I’ve let the day get away from me. It’s been harder and harder to find topics to write about, so that is some of the delay in getting it done. This can be fixed by researching possible topics earlier and writing my post before Monday evening.

As for this column, I hope to continue to bring you good information and tips on all aspects of writing. If there’s anything in particular you would like to see addressed, comment below and let me know. Our Write Side is really here to be a resource to you writers, so don’t hesitate to ask for the content you want. Thanks, and happy writing!
