Coldly Calculating: The Eleventh Hour
A.L. Mabry will be your host each week as we probe the darker corners of your imagination. This series is meant to help feed your mystery/horror muse, so try to give us chills! The prompt is open to interpretation, but try to include the phrase somewhere in your piece.
This Week’s Prompt
This phrase can be attributed to the the bible and has been used widely through history. Matthew 20:9: “And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour they received every man a denarius.” The passage is a reference to the fact that the workers who took over at the eleventh hour of a 12-hour workday received just as much pay at those who had already been working all day. However, over time the usage has changed and it tends to refer to that moment right before it is too late. We’re down to the wire. There is no time left and no escape. Where would rescue come from? Paint us a scene where we witness an impossible rescue. It shouldn’t work, but miraculously it does! I like it dark, don’t be afraid to push the envelope.
The rules are simple:
- Read the prompt and the history behind the phrase.
- Write a story 700 words or less answering the challenge.
- Share the URL to your story in the comments OR, if you don’t have your own blog, share your story in the comments. Either way, it will be seen.
- Add trigger warnings where necessary. Keep vulgarity to a minimum.
- Have FUN!
