Music A to Z: Heavenly Bodies

Music A to Z: Heavenly Bodies

I’ve missed my music. I missed F and G too, in the line up. I had big plans with “Faith” as a theme for F, but that particular week is now a blur in my head. I don’t think I even gave G any consideration. But H I’m looking forward to…

You ready? Let’s start this off with one of my favorite songs ever, back from the days of Hair Bands and my teenage years and early 20s. I know the band had more songs than this one, but it is really the one from Warrant I’ve ever really cared for. In addition to the crooning and soft melody, I love the lyrics. For a young girl looking for love, Jani Lane’s words sounded like everything I wanted to know a man could feel for me.

How I love the way you move
And the sparkle in your eyes
There’s a color deep inside them
Like blue suburban skys

Ahhh, hair bands…I loved them. There’s another Hair Band I loved that put out several songs I liked. One of my favorites is a cover of a Bob Dylan song that was also performed by the great Eric Clapton. And what better video than one from a Freddie Mercury tribute!

Mama take this badge from me
I can’t use it anymore
It’s getting dark too dark to see

And speaking of Eric Clapton, any mix about heaven would be incomplete without his heartbreaking song tribute to his little boy. Every time I read the story, I get tears of my own.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Not every song on my list is about heaven, however. Isn’t it just convenient that heaven’s opposite also begins with “h”? I think so, and I’m glad because it lets me share some more of my favorite “H” songs with you.

Every day it seems like I can’t decide which song from this punk/ska band I love the best, but then I rediscovered this song, and it sealed it’s place as #1. The lyrics don’t necessarily put it there, but rather the beat and the gritty tones of the song will keep it a favorite for a long time to come.

So don’t wake me if I’m dreaming
‘Cause I’m in the mood come on and give it up

of course, there’s always the fun of telling the world off, and no one says it quite like the All American Rejects.

Now you’ll never see what you’ve done to me
You can take back your memories, they’re no good to me
And here’s all your lies, you can look me in the eyes
With the sad, sad look that you wear so well

Do you think it’s possible that I could give them hell while climbing the Stairway to Heaven? That would be hella good!! I’m trying to resist the temptation, but since I am probably the only person out there who is not a Led Zepplin fan, I’m going to cave and share the one song of theirs that belongs on this mixtape. I know it’s long, but it’s a story set to music, and as a writer, I can’t help but appreciate it.

Awesomely done – you covered heaven and hell – one was associated with rock music, while the ‘softies’ still made it big!

Can you assign me a random letter? I promise I’ll do it 😉
